Professor Lex M Bouter

Professor Lex M Bouter
Vrije University, Amsterdam

Professor Lex M Bouter, PhD, has a tenured chair in Methodology and Integrity at the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics of the Amsterdam University Medical Centers and the Department of Philosophy of the Faculty of Humanities of the Vrije Universiteit. Before taking up the current position he was a professor of Epidemiology since 1992. He served his university as its rector between 2006 and 2013.

Subsequently, Professor Bouter prepared for a return to science during a sabbatical leave. In 2014 his tenured professorship was broadened to Methodology and Integrity. He is currently involved in teaching and research regarding responsible conduct of research, questionable research practices and research misconduct. Professor Bouter has supervised 76 PhD students, of whom to date 16 were appointed as professor.

In 2017, Professor Bouter organized the 5th World Conference on Research Integrity in Amsterdam and became chair of the World Conferences on Research Integrity Foundation.

Sabine Kleinert

Dr. Sabine Kleinert
The Lancet

Dr. Sabine Kleinert is a physician with clinical experience in paediatrics and paediatric cardiology in several countries. She joined The Lancet as full-time Medical Editor in 1998, became Executive Editor in 2002, Senior Executive Editor in 2006, and joined the Lancet group’s Senior Management Team in September 2017.

With previous experience in publication ethics and research integrity as a council member and Vice-Chair of the Committee on Publication Ethics from 1999 – 2012, she became a founding member of the planning committee of the first and second World Conference on Research Integrity (Lisbon 2007, Singapore 2010) and she co-chaired the planning committee for the third and fourth World Conference on Research Integrity (Montreal 2013, Rio de Janeiro 2015).

She was also a member of the steering committee of the 2017 (Amsterdam) World Conference on Research Integrity and is a member of the Governing Board of the World Conferences on Research Integrity Foundation. She is now co-chair for the 7th World Conference on Research Integrity to be held in Cape Town in 2021.

Lyn Horn (MBBch, DTM&H, DCH, DipIRE, MPhil, PhD) is currently the Director of the Office of Research Integrity at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and is an Extraordinary [Honorary] Associate Professor in the Centre for Applied Ethics at Stellenbosch University. Prior to moving to UCT three years ago, she held the position of Research Integrity Officer at Stellenbosch University for five years.

Lyn is a medical doctor with a PhD in Bioethics. She worked as a clinician in the public health sector for the first twenty years of her career before transitioning to an academic work environment in 2004. She has been teaching research ethics and bioethics at her home institutions since 2004.

In her current position at UCT she is actively involved in promoting and facilitating the responsible conduct of research across the entire university and provides support to several faculty and senate-level research ethics committees She is also involved in the investigations of allegations of breaches in research ethics and integrity.

Lyn serves as the bioethics consultant for four international EDCTP funded clinical trials relating to Tuberculosis and HIV that are currently active in several African countries, hence she remains closely involved with research teams implementing clinical trials in Africa.

Francis Kombe

Mr Francis Kombe is a founder and co-chair to the African Research Integrity Network (ARIN) and the RHInnO Ethics Africa project director (http://rhinno.net). He is also the chair to the Ethics, Community Engagement and Patients Advocacy and Support (ECEPAS) Working Group under the Global Emerging Pathogen Treatment Consortium (GET).

A UNESCO trained teacher of ethics and an appointed Member of International Forum of Teachers of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics, Mr Kombe has a keen interest and passion in biomedical research ethics, capacity building and community engagement, with over 20 years of experience applying these skills in the context of international collaborative health research.

Mr Kombe holds a Master of Social Science in Health Research Ethics from the UKZN, Master of Science and Post-Graduate Diploma in Public Health from LSHTM and is currently registered as a PhD student in Bioethics and health Law at the University of Witwatersrand. He is a winner of the 2015 Pillars of Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R) Award.

Li Tang

Li Tang is a professor of public policy at the School of International Relations and Public Affairs, Fudan University, Shanghai, China; and a member of the board of directors of the Chinese Association for Science of Science and S&T Policy (CASSSP).

Dr. Tang’s research is focused on research integrity, science, technology and innovation policy, and program evaluation. As principal investigator Dr. Tang has undertaken research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Social Science Fund of China, and the Ministry of Education of China. She won the Excellent Youth Award of CASSSP in 2018. Her research has appeared in Nature, Research Policy, Journal of Technology Transfer, Science and Public Policy, Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology, Journal of Informetrics. She is a co-inventor of the US granted patent “Identification disambiguation in databases”.

Maura Hiney

Maura Hiney

Dr Maura Hiney is a qualified nurse, has a PhD in Molecular Epizootology and Diagnostics, and has worked as both a researcher and Head of Research Support Services at the National University of Ireland Galway.

Maura is currently Head of Post-Award and Evaluation at the Health Research Board Ireland, which manages and evaluates the HRB’s funding portfolio of approximately €180M to support health-relevant research in patient-oriented, population health and health services research. The unit also develops policies for health research relating to good research practice and the Open Science agenda.

Maura has a long-time interest in research Integrity (RI) and has been influential in raising awareness of RI issues in Ireland since 2007. She was deeply involved in establishing the National Forum on Research Integrity and developing a national RI policy framework for broad adoption. Internationally, Maura is co-chair of the European Network of RI Offices (ENRIO) and chaired the Science Europe Working Group on RI. She was a key contributor to the European Competitiveness Council Conclusions on RI in 2015 on behalf of the Luxembourg Presidency.

She is currently the Royal Irish Academy nominee to the All European Academies (ALLEA) Permanent Working Group on Science and Ethics, with whom she coordinated a revision of the European Code of Conduct on RI, launched by Commissioner Moedas in March 2017. She sits on the Policy Advisory Boards of the EU-funded ENTiRE and VIRT2UE projects, which conduct research on RI training, and is a partner on the SOPs4RI project, which is developing a suite of SOPs and guidelines for managing good research practices and RI promotion plan guidelines for adoption in the grant agreements in Horizon Europe.

 

 

Roxana Lescano Guevara

Roxana Lescano Guevara
ASOPEBAID (Peruvian Association for the Care and Use of Animals in Research and Teaching)

Ms. Lescano has worked at NAMRU-6 I Lima, Peru, for over 30 years. Her experience spans from research ethics to regulatory aspects and research integrity, having been actively involved in developing training programs, institutional policies and procedures for scientific integrity.

Ms. Lescano was one of the developers of the Peruvian Responsible Conduct of Research online course (CRI), and continues to speak on research integrity topics, as a guest lecturer, in various parts of Peru and in neighbouring countries. She is the Research Integrity Officer at her NAMRU-6 in Lima, Peru, and a member of two Peruvian IRBs and provides support to other IRBs in Central America. Additionally, and in the aftermath of the 6th WCRI, she was one of the founding members of the Inter-American Network of Research Integrity (RIIN, per initials in Spanish).

Ms. Lescano is a lawyer and has completed a Masters in Bioethics and another Masters in Epidemiological Research.

Temitope O. Olomola is a Senior Lecturer at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria.

He is a member of the Nigerian Young Academy (NYA), where he served as the immediate past president. He is a fellow of the African Science Leadership Program and a member of the Africa Research Integrity Network. He is currently a Visiting Researcher at University of South Africa.

Dr. Olomola is involved in effective science communication and diverse activities to get the next generation interested in the proper conduct of research. While serving as the President of NYA, he began the antiplagiarism campaign using a series of workshops that have been conducted at some Universities around Nigeria to raise awareness and explain how to avoid plagiarism to young researchers.

He also led the steering committee that organized the InterAcademy Partnership project on “state of young women scientists in Africa – using West Africa as a case study” in 2018.

Ana Marušić is Professor of Anatomy and Chair of the Department of Research in Biomedicine and Health at the University of Split School of Medicine, Split, Croatia. She is an Honorary Professor at the University of Edinburgh in the UK, and a Visiting Professor at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technical University in Singapore.

Prof. Marušić chairs the Research Committee of the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME) and is the Co-Editor in Chief of the Journal of Global Health. She is on the Steering Group of the EQUATOR Network and is the Co-Chair of the Cochrane Scientific Committee.

Prof. Marušić was the President of the EASE, CSE, and WAME and member of the ICMJE. Prof. Marušić has more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and was heavily involved with creating the policy of mandatory registration of clinical trials in public registries which helped change the legal regulation of clinical trials worldwide.

Anne-Marie Coriat is Head of Research Landscape at Wellcome. She has over 20 years’ experience in research funding, strategic planning, policy and operational delivery. She leads for Wellcome on work to support an environment in which research can flourish. Anne-Marie received a degree in chemistry and environmental science, was a research technician at Baylor College of Medicine and worked as a hospital biochemist before completing a PhD in developmental biology in Manchester.

Nicola Barsdorf

Nicola Barsdorf is currently the Head of Health Research Ethics in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University. Nicola is a former Fogarty Bioethics scholar and National Institutes of Health (NIH) Bioethics Fellow. She received her Ph.D. in International Health and Bioethics from Bergen University, Norway and an M.H.S. in International Health and Research Ethics from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, USA. She has been actively involved in research ethics for the last 18 years and is passionate about research ethics capacity strengthening in Africa. Nicola has served as an expert consultant to the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the NIAID Division of AIDS on the ethics of HIV prevention and vaccine trials. She continues to consult on and teach research ethics to researchers and REC members from across Africa on behalf of Stellenbosch University and as a faculty member of SARETI (South African Research Ethics Training Initiative). She has served on Stellenbosch University’s Senate Research Ethics Committee, and on both of the institution’s Health Research Ethics Committees for the last 7 years.

She currently leads a Stellenbosch University team on a multi-national Wellcome Trust research ethics grant and supervises a number of postgraduate research ethics students. Her interests include global health research ethics, research integrity and distributive justice in health research funding allocation.

Maléne Fouché holds the position of Director: Research Integrity and National Grants at Stellenbosch University (SU) where she is responsible for the implementation of the Policy for Responsible Research Conduct at Stellenbosch University. Her directorate includes the institutional Research Integrity Officer (RIO) and the expert staff supporting three institutional Research Ethics Committees (Social, Behavioural and Education Research; Animal Care and Use; and Biosafety). Her directorate, on behalf of SU, authorises research grant proposals submitted to several South African funding bodies and are responsible for assuring pre- and post-award compliance on these grants.

Maléne’s academic background is in Biochemistry, Genetics and Informatics. She is currently studying towards a MPhil degree in Bioethics.

Seeiso Koali is currently employed by the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) as the Research Integrity Officer, providing guidance and advice about policies and procedures associated with research integrity; facilitating training to staff as well as ensuring compliance to regulatory requirements that govern responsible conduct of research. Previously, Koali was employed as a lecturer at the National University of Lesotho, in the Department of Philosophy where he taught Bioethics from (2010-2018). He has also been the Head of the Department of Philosophy in (2015-2017) and he has published articles in Bioethics issues. He was promoted to the rank of a senior lecturer in 2016. Koali has also been a member of Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Baylor College of Medicine, Children’s Foundation-Lesotho in 2013-2016.

Koali holds an MSc Med Bioethics & Health Law from the (University of Witwatersrand); MPhil in Biomedical Ethics (Stellenbosch University) and PGDip in Public Health (University of Western Cape), Honours in Philosophy (National University of Lesotho) and B.A. in Philosophy from the Urbaniana Pontifical University, Rome. He is currently pursuing a doctorate degree at Wits University, with specific research focus in African Bioethics.

 

Ntobeko Ntusi

Ntobeko Ntusi is a cardiologist and a Professor of Medicine, currently appointed as the Chair and Head of Medicine at the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital, where serves as Program Director: Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance. He is a Principal Investigator based at the Hatter Institute for Cardiovascular Research in Africa and the Cape Universities Body Imaging Centre as well as a Collaborating Investigator at the Wellcome Centre for Infectious Diseases Research in Africa.

He is the Editor-in-Chief of the South African Heart Journal, and an Associate Editor of Circulation and BMC Medical Imaging. He has been actively engaged and contributed to improved understanding of cardiomyopathy, inflammatory heart disease, HIV-associated cardiovascular disease, and heart failure in South Africa and globally.

 

 

Paula Saner

Paula Saner is the Research Integrity Coordinator (RIC) at the University of Cape Town's (UCT) Office of Research Integrity (ORI). She holds an MA in Classics from UCT and has been an ad hoc member of the Classics teaching staff since 2007. In 2014, she joined the ORI as its Senior Administrative Officer, focussed on supporting the ORI's compliance programme. As the RIC, Paula coordinates the activities of the ORI and maintains external relationships with key government stakeholders. Paula provides administrative and logistical support to the Senate Ethics and Biosafety Committees and is currently developing training modules focussing on the "responsible conduct of research" (RCR) for university personnel. She assists in facilitating ad hoc training in Research Integrity topics to the UCT community, advises researchers on research integrity matters and helps to ensure a robust and up-to-date research integrity policy environment.

Paula was awarded an International Research Exchanges Board (IREX) University Administration Support Programme (UASP) Research Management Fellowship to explore different methods of RCR training in the US in February/March 2019. This experience will guide the development and implementation of an RCR programme at UCT. She is currently pursuing a Master of Education in Higher Education Studies.

 

 

Burtram Fielding

Prof. Fielding is currently the Director: Research Development at the University of the Western Cape and is the Principal Investigator for the Molecular Biology and Virology Research Group in the Department of Medical Biosciences. Burtram has served as the UWC Acting Director: Research Development and UWC Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Innovation. He served two-year terms as the inaugural Chairperson of the UWC Animal Research Ethics and the Biomedical Research Ethics Committees, and a three-year term as the inaugural Humanities and Social Sciences Research Ethics Committee.

A graduate of the University of the Western Cape, Fielding’s research focus is in applied molecular biology in human health. Specifically, his interests include molecular virology and the molecular biology of medicinal plants in the treatment of cancer. He has published numerous refereed articles and is the co-author of four book chapters. His current research is funded by the National Research Foundation (South Africa). I am the Research Compliance Manager. I encourage high quality research integrity as well as ethics in the sphere of research.

This includes but is not limited to supervision, management, and oversight of the University Research Ethics Committees and management of the Ethics administrative personnel. Wits has 5 University Research Ethics Committees that deal with Non-Medical, Medical, Animal Ethics Screening and Control, Biobanks, Clinical Drug Trials, and Institutional Biosafety.

 

 

Ms Nondumiso Jwatya

Ms Nondumiso Jwatya serves as Deputy Director: Multilateral Cooperation, in the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI). Ms Jwatya is responsible for coordinating the DSI’s engagements with multilateral organisations such as the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), International Science Council (ISC), World Bank (WB), Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN), the World Association of Industrial and Technological Research Organizations (WAITRO).

Previously she was employed by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries as an Assistant Director under the Directorate: International Relations.

Ms Jwatya obtained her Master’s degree in Sustainable Agriculture at the University of Free State, and Honour’s degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Fort Hare in 2007.

Dr Skeef is trained as a biochemist and his postgraduate research focused on the effect of trace elements in the control of cancer cells proliferation through regulation of prostaglandins and cyclic adenosine monophosphate production.

He started his working career as a physiology lecturer at Medunsa, and then moved on to join AECI’s biotechnology research group as a research scientist and was later appointed as the manager for corporate social investment at AECI.

Most of the 18 years of his management and leadership experience have been with the NRF, during which time he has overseen and been instrumental in the development of: the Technology and Human Resources for Industry Programme (THRIP); business and industry partnerships; international relations; corporate communication; marketing; new business development; applied research, innovation and collaboration; and his current responsibility reviews and evaluations (RE). The RE directorate is responsible for all peer-based reviews and/or evaluations of applications for funding, rating of individuals and performance assessment of support instruments.

Dr Christa van Zyl serves as Director in the Office of the Deputy CEO for Research in the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), South Africa. She holds a PhD in education and an MBA from the University of Pretoria. She currently supports the portfolios of research ethics and research integrity in the office of the Deputy CEO and was the first person appointed to serve as Research Integrity Officer (RIO) in the HSRC.

Her career at the HSRC spans more than three decades, and during this period she obtained experience in the fields of research, research administration as well as institutional planning and performance reporting. While responsible for coordinating and supporting research grant applications, she successfully applied for an International Extramural Research Development Award (EARDA) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) which helped, from 2008, to build individual as well as institutional capacity in relation to grant applications, grant management and best-practice grant compliance. From 2007 until 2013 she was the South African National Contact Point (NCP) for Socio-Economic and Humanities (SSH) and Science in Society (SiS) under the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Experimental Development of the European Union (EUFP7) – a position that offered invaluable opportunities to build information-sharing networks with counterparts in other countries.

From 2014 to 2016 she served, as one of two South African country experts, on the OEDC-Global Science Forum Expert Group on Research Ethics and New Forms of Data for Social and Economic Research. Recent experience in the context of international conference management include support for planning and hosting the 2015 World Social Science Forum (WSSF) in Durban, South Africa. She is currently one of three persons on the steering committee of the informal African Research Integrity Network (ARIN), and privileged to serve on the Advisory Board of the 6th World Conference on Research Integrity (WCRI).

Dr. Retha Visagie is a founding member and the former chairperson of the Executive Board of the Research Ethics Committee Association of Southern Africa (REASA).  As the Head of the Research Integrity Office at Unisa, she fulfils numerous leadership activities. She is the chairperson of the Academic Integrity Committee, deputy chairperson of the Unisa Research Ethics Review Committee and a member of the Unisa Social and Ethics Committee of Council. She leads inquiries into alleged cases of research misconduct and represents the university as an expert witness during disciplinary hearings. She holds a doctorate in Advanced Psychiatric Nursing Science. Retha completed a postgraduate diploma in Health Research Ethics (Cum Laude) in 2015 through the University of Stellenbosch, receiving the prestigious title of Fogarty Fellow.

She is the 2018 recipient of the DST/SARIMA Award for Professional Excellence in Research Management. Her research niche area focuses on research ethics and integrity scholarship and she remains active as a research supervisor. She is a co-editor of a recently published book on Social Science Research Ethics in Africa. As a sought-after research ethics facilitator, she has trained more than 1000 academics and members of research ethics review committees since 2011.

 
Ms Caz McNamara

Caz has a Masters degree in Biochemistry but has worked in the Academic Research Management sector for 13 years. First through the Rhodes Education Faculty she worked in the Maths, ICT, Science and Technology (MIST) Research Support Centre, and thereafter in a SARChI Research Chair in Mathematics Education. At Rhodes, she also taught introductory Computer Literacy as part of a professional school teacher development programme, and the preparatory entrance exam courses for the ACE(ICT) programme in both South Africa and Namibia. In 2011, she moved to Wits University in Johannesburg to manage the development of the multi-disciplinary Sydney Brenner Institute in Molecular Bioscience (SBIMB). Caz is currently the Manager of the national DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (CoE-MaSS), and previously Manager of the national DSI-NICIS National e-Science Teaching and Training Platform (NEPTTP) - both multi-University collaborative projects.

Caz has also served on numerous conference Local Organising Committees (LOCs): SAARMSTE, SARIMA and WCRI. She is currently working towards completing the Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS) Professional Accreditation: https://www.researchmanagement.org.au/arms-foundation-level-accreditation. Ms. Lescano has worked at NAMRU-6 I Lima, Peru, for over 30 years. Her experience spans from research ethics to regulatory aspects and research integrity, having been actively involved in developing training programs, institutional policies and procedures for scientific integrity.

Ms. Lescano was one of the developers of the Peruvian Responsible Conduct of Research online course (CRI), and continues to speak on research integrity topics, as a guest lecturer, in various parts of Peru and in neighbouring countries. She is the Research Integrity Officer at her NAMRU-6 in Lima, Peru, and a member of two Peruvian IRBs and provides support to other IRBs in Central America. Additionally, and in the aftermath of the 6th WCRI, she was one of the founding members of the Inter-American Network of Research Integrity (RIIN, per initials in Spanish).

Ms. Lescano is a lawyer and has completed a Masters in Bioethics and another Masters in Epidemiological Research.

Susan Zimmerman is the Executive Director of the Secretariat on Responsible Conduct of Research in Ottawa. SRCR is responsible for the implementation of the Tri-Agency Framework on Responsible Conduct of Research on behalf of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). The Secretariat is also responsible for the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans.

She is a lawyer whose career has focused on health law and public policy. A native of Montreal, Susan received her undergraduate degree from Bryn Mawr College, civil law and common law degrees from McGill University, and a Master of Laws from the University of Toronto. Her professional experience includes positions as a senior research associate at the Centre for Medicine, Ethics and Law at McGill University, Director of Legislation and Law Reform at the Canadian Bar Association, legal counsel at Health Canada and Director of Research for the Law Commission of Canada. Prior to her appointment to the Secretariat in September, 2007, Ms Zimmerman was a member of the Health Law Group at the Toronto office of a national law firm, where she represented health care institutions and a variety of health care professionals.

Ms. Zimmerman has also been a university lecturer in health law and ethics and a member of research ethics boards.

Ntobeko Ntusi is a cardiologist and a Professor of Medicine, currently appointed as the Chair and Head of Medicine at the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital, where serves as Program Director: Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance. He is a Principal Investigator based at the Hatter Institute for Cardiovascular Research in Africa and the Cape Universities Body Imaging Centre as well as a Collaborating Investigator at the Wellcome Centre for Infectious Diseases Research in Africa.

He is the Editor-in-Chief of the South African Heart Journal, and an Associate Editor of Circulation and BMC Medical Imaging. He has been actively engaged and contributed to improved understanding of cardiomyopathy, inflammatory heart disease, HIV-associated cardiovascular disease, and heart failure in South Africa and globally.

Dr. Daniel Barr is a Principal Research Integrity Advisor at RMIT University, Australia. Prior to joining RMIT University, he worked in research management at the University of Melbourne and Deakin University. Dr. Barr has also worked as a biomedical scientist in Australia and the United States.

Specialising in research integrity and ethics, Dr. Barr has developed and implemented initiatives in policy, education and training, and support services that aim to enhance the responsible conduct of research at universities. He also conducts research in research integrity, and is working to develop Guiding Principles for Research Integrity for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation.

Dr. Barr has a BSc (Hons) and a PhD in immunology from the University of Melbourne. Lex Bouter obtained a MSc degree in Medical Biology at Utrecht University and joined Maastricht University in 1984, where he was trained as an epidemiologist and obtained his PhD. In 1988 he published a textbook on epidemiology, the seventh revised Dutch edition of which appeared in 2016 and the first English edition in 2018. In 1992, he took up a tenured position as Professor of Epidemiology in Amsterdam. From 2006 until 2013 he was Rector Magnificus of his university.

Subsequently, Professor Bouter prepared for a return to science during a sabbatical leave. In 2014 his tenured professorship was broadened to Methodology and Integrity. He is currently involved in teaching and research regarding responsible conduct of research, questionable research practices and research misconduct. In 2017, Professor Bouter organized and co-chaired the 5th World Conference on Research Integrity in Amsterdam and became chair of the World Conferences on Research Integrity Foundation.

Professor Mai Har Sham is a Pro-Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Choh-Ming Li Professor of Biomedical Sciences. Professor Sham obtained her BSc and MPhil degrees in Biology at CUHK. She was awarded a Croucher Foundation Scholarship and pursued her PhD in Biochemistry in the University of Cambridge. She received her postdoctoral training in Developmental Genetics in the National Institute for Medical Research in London, U.K. Professor Sham joined the University of Hong Kong as a lecturer and progressed to full professor. She headed the Department of Biochemistry, where she promoted not only excellent research, but also good practice in teaching. She was dedicated to medical and science curriculum development, she led the design and establishment of the first Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences curriculum in Hong Kong.

Professor Sham has extensive experience in research management and leadership. In her previous roles as Assistant Dean (Research) and Associate Vice-President (Research) in the University of Hong Kong, she contributed to research grant management, research assessment exercises, strategic development of research and collaborations with international and mainland China institutions. She facilitated the development of research postgraduate education and joint PhD supervision programmes with partner institutions. Professor Sham is a member of the World Conference on Research Integrity Foundation. Working together with the international consortium, she promotes responsible conduct of research and good science in universities and research institutions.

As a developmental geneticist, Professor Sham leads a research team focusing on the molecular mechanisms of mammalian development and human congenital disorders. Her research programmes cover areas of gene regulation and molecular signaling, craniofacial and hearing disorders, genetic bases and mutant mouse models of rare human diseases, stem cells and tissue regeneration. She served as the Director of the Centre for Reproduction Development and Growth in the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong. She is currently the President of the Hong Kong Society of Developmental Biology. She serves as an Editorial Committee Member for Annual Review on Genomics and Human Genetics.

In March 2002, she became Executive Editor, and in July 2006 Senior Executive Editor.

She joined the Committee on Publication Ethics in 1999, was elected to Council in 2002, and served as Vice-Chair from 2006 to March 2012. She was a member of the planning committee of the first and second World Conference on Research Integrity (Lisbon 2007, Singapore 2010) and she co-chaired the planning committee for the third and fourth World Conference on Research Integrity (Montreal 2013, Rio 2015). She teaches science communication, research methodology, and research ethics/integrity, and most of her research focuses on these areas. Sonia is coordinator of the Professional Masters Program in Science Education [Educação, Gestão e Difusão em Biociências] at IBqM. She is coordinator of the Graduate Council for Research Ethics at UFRJ and former member of the Research Integrity Committee of the Brazilian Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq).

She represents the field of humanities and social sciences in this committee. She has been among the organizers of Brazilian Meeting on Research Integrity, Science and Publication Ethics (BRISPE), held biannually in Brazil since 2010.
